Always Awake

Everything we do, you and I, we need to plan. It’s true. If we do not make an effort to prepare and plan for the day ahead of us, we may be in over our heads with glucose levels out of control, swinging high and low, all over the place. It’s like we have a little child on our back all day long, everyday and, that little child is ALWAYS awake.

Some days we need to remember to bring a few snacks with us – – perhaps we have a late lunch meeting at the office and we need to tide ourselves over to keep the glucose in range until the lunch begins. Our co-workers, if they do not know about our T1D, may think we’re weird because we’re eating snacks right before lunch. Also, we always need to carry glucose fixes with us – – everywhere we go. Glucose tablets, GU packets, honey, a banana, juice – – whatever we can keep discreetly in our pockets or purses with at least 20 grams of fast acting carbs – – we always need to have this on hand. ALWAYS. We can’t just forget one day because well, that one day we forget could be the day we are shaking, sweating profusely, shivering, and crying for help, all at the same time, because we forgot to take along a few extra fast acting, glucose elevating, carbs.

Always awake. That’s how you and I gotta be.
